What is Electrical Engineering?

Electrical Engineering majors prepare to support the needs of a wide range of industries and companies.

Electrical engineers apply the laws of electrical phenomena to design, develop and improve electronics and solid-state devices, and to control, convert and distribute energy. At Houston Baptist University, the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Program equips Electrical Engineering majors with the latest skills and quality hands-on experience for success in Electrical Engineering careers.

Graduates with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering will have a wide range of professional opportunities in Electrical Engineering jobs, including:

  • Analyzing the requirements and costs of electrical systems for companies and industries
  • Designing, developing, testing and supervising the manufacturing of electrical equipment, such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems or power generation equipment
  • Designing the electrical systems of automobiles and aircraft
  • Designing and developing electronic equipment, including broadcast and communications systems, such as smartphones and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, and working in areas closely related to computer hardware

Electrical engineers design, develop and improve electronics and solid-state devices.

Electrical Engineering Career Paths

Electrical engineers work in a variety of industries and business settings. Electrical engineers who work for the federal government research, develop and evaluate electronic devices used in a variety of areas, such as aviation, computing, transportation and manufacturing. Electrical engineers work on federal electronic devices and systems, including satellites, flight systems, radar and sonar systems, and communications systems.

Electrical engineers design operational technology (OT), which is used in industrial control systems, and includes a wide variety of valves, pumps, meters, sensors, reactors, turbines, generators and other electro-mechanical devices. These devices are now equipped with sensors that communicate information back to human operators, who send back control signals to the devices.

Electrical Engineering professionals are needed to manage devices that are widely used in the energy, chemical and petroleum processing industries. The healthcare industry also employs a wide variety of sensors, imaging devices, pumps, stimulators, robots and other electro-mechanical devices that require the expertise of electrical engineers. The marine transportation, building construction and automation industries and many others also employ such devices in order to accomplish routine business operations.

Learn by Doing

In HBU’s College of Science and Engineering, students working on a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, as well as students in Cyber Engineering and Computer Science, get an up-close look at their profession starting in their first year of study.

Electrical Engineering majors also learn to address cyber-related issues (e.g., security, Internet of Things, embedded systems, software protection, network defense, programming, mobility) from the beginning of their freshman year.

SAFE Engineering and SAFE Cyber Projects

The engineering programs at Houston Baptist University have adopted an intensely active learning model that uses flexible hardware and software platforms (laboratory equipment owned by the students), and a series of carefully designed and guided projects. For Electrical Engineering majors, these platforms and projects enhance the learning outcomes, motivate students to solve problems and introduce the strategies of relating physical systems to cyber systems.

The Securing America’s Future through Engineering (SAFE) Lab courses provide the foundation for Electrical Engineering majors and all engineering students at HBU, starting with a two-semester sequence of engineering projects during the first year of the curriculum. These courses are taken in conjunction with math and calculus.

Learning Electrical Engineering

SAFE Lab courses are taught in specially designed classrooms with tables seating four students and with ready-to-use fabrication equipment, including soldering irons and other tools. Coupling fixed, University-owned equipment with each student’s personal laboratory allows faculty to mix lectures, group problem-solving, laboratory exercises, prototyping and shop activities. Student-owned labs also move hands-on learning experiences for Electrical Engineering and other students out of the physical classroom and into student housing, the library or the coffee shop. This mixed delivery mode reaches a broader set of learners and begins cultivating an engineering mindset from the beginning of the program to fully prepare Electrical Engineering majors for future careers.

Electrical Engineering majors also benefit from curricular threads, which are broad themes or topics that appear throughout all HBU engineering programs. Curricular threads include Cloud Computing (storage, access, security), Cybersecurity, Mobility (wireless networks, mobile devices, Internet of Things), Data Analytics (Big Data, machine learning), and Project Management.
