J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are deeply Christian tales that are loved by millions of readers, both believers and non-believers, and the imaginary world of Middle-earth speaks powerfully to the issues and concerns of our modern day. How did he do it? In this course with Dr. Holly Ordway, you will explore how Tolkien’s reading of modern literature contributed to his creative imagination, and learn from him as a role model for Christians engaging with culture productively, discerning, and transformatively.
This is a one-week intensive course, Monday-Friday, June 14-18; class sessions will be held live via Zoom from 3:00-5:00 PM Central (these sessions will also be recorded). Anyone from around the world can join the class to listen to the lectures, discuss, and ask questions. Students taking the class for credit will have additional readings and assignments.
Go Deeper classes are intended to virtual surveyors, though there may be some space for in-person classroom attendance. Speak with the instructor to see if in-person attendance is possible.
