Culture Influencer: Renae Schumann

Dr. Renae Schumann, HBU Dean of the School of Nursing and Allied Health, was nominated and selected to represent the Texas Nursing Association as one of 10 members on a statewide committee of the Texas Board of Nursing. This committee will review the Differentiated Essential Competencies (DECs), which provide at least part of the base of all nursing curricula, from LVN to BSN graduates. The DECs are required to be integrated into nursing education programs in Texas by rule.

All programs include the DECs in their curriculum and many base their course and clinical objectives on the DECs. The DECs provide a common standard for nursing program outcomes and graduate preparation. The last review of the DECs was published in 2010. Dr. Schumann will be the only member of the committee with both RN and PhD credentials. Dr. Schumann is a statewide leader in nursing practice and nursing education, and serves on many other regional and state boards, in addition to providing leadership and vision for HBU’s School of Nursing and Allied Health.
