On February 12, 2019, Dr. Karen Frederick, LPC, CSC (Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified School Counselor and assistant professor of Psychology), with Dr. Alvia Baldwin, LPC-S, CSC (Licensed Professional Counselor- Supervisor, Certified School Counselor and Assistant Professor of Counseling) and Dr. John T. Spoede, Jr., LPC-S, LCDC, NCC, CSC (Licensed Professional Counselor- Supervisor, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, National Credentialed Counselor, Certified School Counselor and the director, Center for Research and Doctoral Studies and Assistant Professor of Education,) presented at the Texas School Counseling Association 14th Annual Conference. The session they presented was entitled, “Hurricane Harvey: Lessons Learned.”
In the session, they presented on their original research study, which included data gathered from school counselors who were affected by Hurricane Harvey. The session abstract stated that, “Just over a year ago, Hurricane Harvey ravaged the city of Houston just as the new school year was starting. School counselors were at the forefront, trying to reach out to their student’s families, while possibly being seriously impacted or displaced from their homes themselves. School counselors took leadership and coordinated outreach programs and collaborated with others in the community to try to help meet the needs in the community. This session focuses on those efforts. What worked?”
