The film is based upon the memoirs of a female journalist in Afghanistan in the years immediately following the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers. I have not read the book, but I hope it has more substance than the film. I frequently fuss about the egregious use of obscene language, but this film makes Scarface look like a church bulletin.
The film does have one redeeming quality: stunning photography of Afghanistan, Not even that can atone for the negative aspects of the film. There is no real explanation of the issues involved in American involvement in Afghanistan, and there is a strong message that the journalists posted to foreign sites are little more than lecherous boozers.
Fey is anything but funny and Martin Freeman should go back to playing Bilbo Baggins or Dr. Watson.
