HBU Pre-Optometry Professional Society (HBU POPS)

HBU POPS (HBU Pre-Optometry Professional Society) is an organization dedicated to students who are interested in the field of Optometry, Ophthalmology, and other careers pertaining to vision. They work to inform others about these careers, and also provide volunteer hours to various vision health groups.

Our club invites guest speakers who help the students learn about vision health and the careers that focus on it. We invite optometrists and ophthalmologists who discuss the current trends and new advances in technology, care, and regulations. Representatives from optometry schools visit to discuss the application process. We are especially grateful to our optometry HBU alumni who dedicate their time to speak about their experiences in optometry school and in their practices.

Some of our members attend the Texas Optometric Association’s (TOA) convention each year to meet with the state’s optometrists and participate in the student day events. We often win awards for our enthusiasm and knowledge.

POPS also serves the community by participating in walks, health fairs, and other community service events. In addition to our community service, we collaborate with area volunteer organizations to provide vision screenings around the city to those in need.

In addition to our group’s volunteerism, we also collaborate with AED (national organization for pre-med students) for social events, as well as participate to host the COSM banquet each year. Fundraisers to raise money for our club allow us to enjoy refreshments and other fun during our meetings.
