Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction

The Curriculum and Instruction masters degree provides expertise related to curriculum content and instructional methodology. Throughout the program, students develop knowledge and skills through working with children and teachers. The College of Education maintains close ties with area schools and school districts, so students benefit from practical experiences and professional opportunities. Most graduates of this program are employed in Houston-area schools. The MEd Curriculum and Instruction degree is available with or without certification or specializations.

Curriculum and Instruction Masters without Certification

The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (without certification) is a 36-hour program for certified teachers to increase their knowledge and skills without pursuing a certification or specialization, but students can add a supplemental certification if desired. This degree offers students additional expertise in education while also allowing them to take a variety of courses across many areas in education, and it can also be earned while adding an optional certification in English as a Second Language (ESL). The same degree is offered online through the Curriculum and Instruction masters online program.

Non-Certification Program Requirements

The Curriculum and Instruction masters degree program offers the student 18 hours of core curriculum in the area of school reform, curriculum development, teaching methodology, research, and technology integration. Student are also required to take 18 hours of electives in the area of education. These elective areas can include coursework related to educational administration, special education, instructional technology, reading or ESL. Students will be recommended for graduation when they have completed 36 semester hours and passed a comprehensive examination.

Students are required to successfully complete coursework (with no grade lower than a C) and comprehensive exams for the curriculum and instruction degree, and student teaching clinicals and exams required for state certification.
