Position Summary

Houston Baptist University invites applications and nominations for an exceptional leader to serve as the Dean of the College of Science and Engineering, starting Fall 2021 or earlier.

The Dean will participate in the development and planning of a new STEM-Nursing building (capital campaign and facility planning has begun). A strategic plan was developed in 2020 that could drive enrollment growth and greater impact through the year 2025.  The Dean will also work closely with an outstanding Science and Engineering Advisory Board, representing executive experience in many Houston industries.

The Dean serves with the Provost and other deans at HBU on the Dean’s Council, which is the primary leadership team for all provost and academic affairs. The College offer eight B.S. degrees, including strong science degrees (Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Math), and new and rapidly growing engineering and computing degrees (Three degrees started in Fall 2018 – Computer Science, Cyber Engineering, Electrical Engineering, the Information Systems degree will launch in Fall 2021).  The college offers special strengths in health professions advising, project-based learning and undergraduate research, partnerships with local industries, and the only engineering-based cyber programs in the Houston metro area.

Job Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, duties of the position will include, but are not limited to: strategic planning, fund-raising, recruiting and retention, curriculum development and implementation, facilities planning, faculty recruitment, budget management, industry outreach, teaching, assessment and accreditation, and support of the university’s faith-based mission.  The university’s goal is to achieve ABET accreditation for the new engineering and computer science programs at the earliest possible date. The Dean will also be the key representative of the College of Engineering to industry, the community, parents, and students.


Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in one of the disciplines offered by the College. Leadership experience, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to high-quality student success are expected.
