HBU’s Association of Student Educators Wins Prestigious State Award

July 24, 2013

The Association of Student Educators (ASE), HBU’s professional organization for future educators, has been honored by the Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) as the outstanding university chapter in the state of Texas for the year 2012-2013.  This prestigious award recognizes excellence in leadership, programming, participation and service.  An extensive written application, an analysis of a scrapbook documenting activities and an interview of Amy Wethington, the ASE president, resulted in ASE receiving this honor.

ASE excelled on each evaluation criteria:  leadership, programming, participation and service.  A leadership team met bimonthly to plan activities, and each team member coordinated a different part of the organization’s activities.  The leadership team included president, Amy Wethington; vice-president, Jenneth Olivares; secretary, Blanca Dimas; treasurer, Kaylyn Court; and projects manager, Juanita Camarillo.

The membership also met twice each month for programs presented by School of Education and Behavioral Science faculty and practicing professionals on a variety of topics.  The program topics included handling stress, education internship possibilities, classroom management, helping students and their families deal with grief, what principals look for during interviews, and planning/preparing for student teaching.

ASE activities, however, were not limited to informational programs.  Members participated in many significant service projects.  These included tutoring at local elementary schools, co-sponsoring the HBU Teaching and Learning Symposium, sponsoring a fieldtrip for students from a low-socioeconomic area to come to HBU and see what college is like, and decorating University Place’s technology lab as well as helping seniors there learn to use technology.

This is the fourth time ASE has received this award:  1988-1989, 1990-1991, 2009-2010 and 2012-2013.
