Position Summary:

The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences is seeking a Chair for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. The Chair will hold the academic rank of associate professor or professor depending on applicant’s qualifications. The chair will teach a reduced load and hold responsibilities required of a professor at same rank in addition to the identified Chair responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities:

At HBU, it is the responsibility of the department chair to assume shared responsibility with the dean for department curriculum building and the counseling of department majors. The department chair will counsel with the dean to whom he or she is responsible on the selection and promotion of faculty members, on budget preparation, on faculty course scheduling and staffing, and on the making of recommendations for the acquisition of library materials. Chairs should also ensure that all their efforts are in support of the University’s vision, mission, and goals, and in accordance with the Preamble of the University’s Bylaws.
 
In the COEBS, chairs responsibilities include:
  • Conducting and documenting regularly held department meetings;
  • Conferencing with students regarding problems and grievances;
  • Signing degree plans, exception forms and course notation forms before they are submitted to the dean for signature;
  • Overseeing syllabi and submitting them to the dean’s administrative assistant after verifying that they meet College/Department standards;
  • Overseeing the book order process for courses within the department (as described in the Bookstore’s policy) and obtaining desk copies for adjunct faculty members;
  • Overseeing the FPS process for faculty in their departments:  conducting yearly conferences, observing in the classrooms of faculty in their departments and submitting to the dean a written summary document about each faculty members performance;
  • Developing yearly assessment plans and reports in collaboration with the dean;
  • Preparing budget for department in collaboration with the dean;
  • Overseeing faculty sponsors of student organizations housed within the department;
  • Collaborating with Directors of On-Line Education and Graduate Programs regarding curriculum and assessment in C&I.
  • Oversee curriculum alignment and development within the department
  • Assure accreditation needs are met within the department
  • Other duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Ed.D./Ph.D in Curriculum and Instruction or related field ( ex. reading, instructional technology, special education, etc.)
  • Experience in face-to- face and on-line teaching in higher education
  • Public or Private K-12 teaching experience
  • Record of research and scholarly activity
  • Record of grant and/or foundation funding
  • Preferred Experience serving on Dissertation/Thesis committees
  • Preferred Experience in implementing TAC per TEA rules and regulations
