Am I required to live on campus?
Since 1960, Houston Baptist University has been committed to the education of the "whole person." That's why the Residence Colleges were built in 1960, on-campus Apartments in 1996, the Mest Wing of the Women's Residence College in 2000, and our newest addition The Lake House in 2008. We want to give you a variety of choices on-campus in order to fully integrate a residence life experience as part of your education. Not only that, but research shows that students who belong to a campus community have a more productive and ultimately more satisfying college experience, and our Room and Board costs are among the lowest in the state. In order to emphasize the importance of this invaluable life experience, we have a Campus Living Policy that states:
All unmarried undergraduate students (under the age of 21 prior to September 1) and who are not living at home along with students who have completed less than 96 credit hours at the beginning of the fall semester are required to live on campus.
When will I receive my room assignment?
For the Fall Semester: You should receive your room assignment at SOAR. At SOAR you may also request a specific roommate.
For the Spring Semester: You should receive your room assignment by mail or e-mail approximately two weeks prior to the beginning of the spring semester. Move-in is usually the Saturday prior to the start of the term.
How are roommates selected?
The roommate matching information you indicated on your Housing Form will help us match you with a compatible roommate.
When you receive your room assignment, we will provide you with the name and email of your new roommate (and your roommate will receive your information). This way, you and your future roommate can communicate prior to move-in. You will not receive your suite or room number before you move in, because the room assignments are subject to change.
What happens if my roommate and I don't get along?
We encourage you to give your roommate a chance. As needed the Residence Life staff will work with roommates to identify issues and help resolve conflict. The Resident Director or Residence Life staff will make room changes if necessary.
Are there private rooms available?
There are a limited number of private rooms and efficiency apartments on campus and they are assigned on a "first-come, first-served" basis. Private rooms are only offered if space is available.
Who are RDs & RAs?
-
An RD is the Resident Director for the Residence Colleges or Apartments. This is a professional staff who is responsible for overall management of their facility.
-
An RA is a Resident Assistant. The RA is a student leader that is supervised by the RD or other Residence Life staff.
I was coming to HBU but now I want to cancel my housing application. What do I do and is there a refund policy?
I am on a scholarship (athletic, academic, or otherwise). Do I still need to pay a housing deposit?
Yes, everyone who applies for housing is required to pay a housing deposit.
Can I bring a car to campus? Where can I park?
Yes. There is parking available near the Residence Colleges and Apartments as well as in several other lots on campus. You must have a current or valid HBU parking hang-tag from the HBU Police (generally obtained during registration).
What are the meal plan choices offered?
Are residents required to have a meal plan?
Is there a Post Office on campus and where is it located?
Yes. The University Post Office is located in the MD Anderson Student Center.
