Nursing Scholarships
The following list of scholarships are available for nursing students. Other scholarships are available to students enrolled in any nursing or health related program. The contact person’s name and address are given for the scholarships offered through avenues outside of the School of Nursing and Allied Health.
When seeking information about these scholarships, clarify that you are seeking financial assistance for studies in a nursing program. Some of the scholarships are specific for the University; these scholarships are marked with an asterisk (*). The scholarships that are not marked with an asterisk are not "HBU Nursing Student Scholarships."

American Association of Critical Care Nursing
The Houston Chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nursing has funds available for Awards and Scholarships for assistance with educational advancement. Criteria for selection include chapter membership (there is a category for student membership).

The River Oaks Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association offers scholarship for women pursuing education for professional career development.

Associated Nursing Alumni Scholarship
Scholarships offered for $500 or $1000 based on the following criteria:

GPA 3.0 on 4.0 scale

Evidence of financial need

Student is in the clinical portion of the program. (Student has successfully completed NURS 2323 & 2404)
Students must repay the money if they do not complete the nursing program.

Black Nurses’ Association
When funds are available, the Black Nurses’ Association offers scholarship on a one time basis. Requirements for consideration are:

Enrolled in clinical portion of the program and be in good standing at the time of application

GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale

Present three letters of recommendation (one faculty, a community person and an RN or LVN active in BNA)

Active membership in BNA for six months to one year with local dues current at the time of application

Provides $1,000 to $2,000 as a one-time award to go toward tuition, fees, books, books or other expenses directly related to enrollment at Houston Baptist University as an undergraduate nursing major.

Provides $1,000 to $2,000 per year for undergraduate nursing students who are Latin American females with preference given to those from Honduras, Guatemala or Costa Rica.

Harris County Medical Society Alliance
Provides $500 to $3,000 as a one-time award. The application requires a letter of recommendation from the Dean of the School of Nursing and letters of recommendation from two college instructors (preferably, but not necessarily, from a clinical nursing instructor), recent photograph and official transcripts from all colleges previously attended and the current program in which enrolled. A personal interview is conducted.
Criteria include:

Healthcare and Nursing Education Foundation
The Healthcare and Nursing Education Foundation (HNEF) offers academic scholarships to qualified students who require financial assistance, demonstrate the desire and the ability to pursue a professional nursing education in the greater Houston Community. The scholarship provides financial support for studies toward a bachelor’s or advanced nursing degree.
To be eligible for this scholarship, the student must meet the following selection criteria:

Have a household income of less than $50,000.

Express a sincere desire to actively pursue a professional career in nursing.
-
If currently a high school senior graduating in the next 12 months, take the SAT or ACT exam prior to submitting and application.
-
If currently enrolled in a college or university, provide documentation of current academic standing and courses taken that are prerequisites for entrance into an accredited bachelor’s or advanced nursing program.
-
If anticipating entrance into bachelor’s or advanced degree nursing program, documentation of acceptance of acceptance into a college or university in the greater Houston area.
-
Not be related by degree of consanguinity (child, grandchild or niece/nephew) to a member of the HNEF Board of Directors, an employee or a contractor.

*Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship
Varying amounts based on availability of funds are awarded for the duration of time in the undergraduate nursing program. Provides $500 to $1000 per year to support students who are progressing in the nursing program and have completed NURS 2323 & 2404.
Criteria include:

*Memorial Hermann School of Nursing Alumni
The alumni of the Lilly Jolly School of Nursing established a scholarship program for students enrolled in the BSN program at HBU. The scholarship provides a $2000 award to a student each year. The student must be enrolled in the clinical courses and show strong promise of success in the program.
Memorial Hermann Memorial City Scholarship
The MHMCH Volunteer Service Scholarship Fund is administered by the Trustees of the scholarship fund. To apply, a student must be currently enrolled in the human health care field and attending an accredited college or university. The scholarship is a one-time monetary ward this is sent directly to the school to be used only for tuition, fees and books.
Applications are accepted by October 1 and March 1. Application forms are available with the School of Nursing faculty.

*Gwen A. and Michel J. Mellinger Endowed Scholarship for Nursing
This scholarship honors Halisia Frazier Cannon, the donors’ granddaughter, and a BSN graduate from HBU. Varying amounts based on availability of funds are awarded for the duration of time in the undergraduate nursing program. Criteria include successful completion of NURS 2323 & 2404.
*Myrtle Heiman Endowed Scholarship
Varying amounts based on availability of funds are awarded for the duration of time in the undergraduate nursing program. The scholarship is designated for a female student with preference given to those of the Baptist faith who are mature students.

Hispanic Nurses Association
One-time awards are provided by the Hispanic Nurses Association, Houston Chapter. Scholarships are awarded once a year beginning in the fall semester and are based on academic achievement, financial need, involvement in school and community activities and counselor/teacher recommendations.

National Student Nurses’ Association, Inc.
The National Student Nurses’ Association awards individual one-time scholarships of $1,000 to $2,500 in honor of Frances Tompkins. The scholarships are based on academic achievement, financial need and involvement in nursing student organizations and community activities related to health care. School sponsors may require additional criteria. Applications must be received by February 1. The application must be accompanied by a minimal processing fee. All applications must submit a copy of their most recent college transcripts or grade report. NSNA members must submit a copy of their membership. Registered nurse in baccalaureate programs and license vocational nurses in programs leading to registered nurse licensure must submit a copy of their license to be considered for the Career Mobility Scholarships.
Navy Nursing Program
The U.S. Navy is providing a $5,000 sign-on bonus to qualified student nursing applicants.

Oncology Nursing Society
As funds are available, the Houston Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society awards scholarships for students expressing interest in oncology nursing.
The criteria for selection is as follows:

*The Reverend D.R. Pevoto Scholarship
The award is given in honor of Reverend D.R. Pevoto, one of the first founders and the first superintendent of Memorial Hospital System. Varying amounts based on availability of funds are annually awarded to three or more undergraduate nursing students for the duration of their studies in the School of Nursing. The scholarship is for tuition, books, or other expenses directly related to enrollment at Houston Baptist University as a nursing major.

Sigma Theta Tau
Sigma Theta Tau is a honor society for professional nurses. Th Eta Phi Chapter is the local organization for Houston Baptist University. The Eta Phi Chapter awards $500 annually to a graduate student for advanced studies in nursing. Applications for the scholarship may be obtained from the Counselor who is one of the nursing faculty.
Texas Nurses Association
District 9 of the Texas Nurses Association offers scholarships for undergraduate and graduate nursing education. A committee of educators and researchers select recipients by blind review. Applications for the scholarships may be obtained from:
