Teaching Focus
Dr. Lewis' teaching focus is on language arts (reading & writing). She is a certified Reading Recovery Teacher Leader (trains teachers in RR) and a certified 6 Traits Trainer. She has worked with SBEC on the development and revision of the PPR-EC4 test. Most recently, before coming to HBU, she served as the Director of Elementary Language Arts in Spring ISD.
Additional Information
Dr. Sharon Lewis' writing interests include: working with struggling readers and expanding the knowledge of vocabulary for the struggling reader. Publications and professional presentation have included building school literacy teams, empowerment in teachers, a classroom intervention & teaching video [it was a state showcase project], portfolio use, assessment, four-day workshops for early literacy, four-day workshops for literacy in the intermediate grades, 6 traits writing training, writing for TAKS and other reading related sessions.
Dr. Lewis serves on the Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading (TAIR) executive board and is the program co-chair. She also serves TAIR as governmental relations and travels to Washington annually to speak with legislators. She is also on the Greater Houston Area Reading Council (GHARC) executive board as membership treasurer.
