Biochemistry-Molecular Biology

In addition to our Biology major, Houston Baptist University also offers a Biochemistry-Molecular Biology (BCMB) major.

BCMB is an interdisciplinary major with courses in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics included.

It is the toughest major.

This major incorporates the training needed for students to compete for spaces in medical school, dental school and graduate programs in the biological sciences, in addition to entry-level employment in biomedical research at academic institutions and in the biotechnology industry.

The Biology Department at HBU offers a Biology Honors program for exceptional Biology or Biochemistry-Molecular Biology majors.  The Biology Honors program consists of a year-long independent research project under the guidance of a Biology faculty member.  Accepted students conduct their research on a topic of their choice and then write and defend a thesis.  Students will receive course credit for their work and an “Honors” notation on their transcript and diploma. Contact Dr. Rachel Hopp ( for more information.

BCMB students are encouraged to apply for summer positions in research institutions. Students from the HBU have been accepted into summer research programs at University of Texas Health Science Center - Houston, University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine, University of Houston, Texas A&M University Health Science Center, and Rice University.

BCMB and Biology are housed in the Department of Biology. But the entire College of Science and Mathematics is involved in the BCMB major.
