Department Overview
The Department of Mathematics and Physics offers majors in
Mathematics,
Mathematical Studies and
Physics. In addition, a major in
Composite Science is offered jointly by the Department of Mathematics and Physics and the
Department of Chemistry. Students who major in Mathematics, Mathematical Sciences or Physics may choose either a
B.A. or a
B.S. degree.
Honors programs are available for students majoring in Mathematics or Physics. Minors in Mathematics and Physics are also offered.
We also offer a
pre-engineering program, which allows you to complete essential course work in mathematics, physics and engineering before transferring to a cooperating university to complete a degree in engineering. Mathematics and physics courses are also offered to support programs in business, chemistry, and the health professions.

You will benefit from the many advantages and opportunities our department has,
including faculty who are
actively involved in research and facilities that enable you to work at the leading edge of their fields. The student-to-faculty ratio is very low, which makes for an excellent learning environment. And the faculty is highly dedicated to your education through both curricular and extracurricular activities.
We maintain our own computer lab, which includes 20 IBM compatible computers. Software available for student use includes Maple, MATLAB, Minitab, Quickfield, Geometer’s Sketchpad, WinEdt, MikTex, MathType, TI Smartview, TI Connect, and Microsoft Office.
The department also provides
free tutoring for freshmen level math and physics courses and an environment in which students may come and work on their homework with student tutors available for rendering immediate help.
Student Activities
Our local chapter of the
Society of Physics Students is open to any HBU student who is at all interested in physics. (Use our contact information above if you are interested in joinging.)
We also have a local chapter of
Sigma Pi Sigma, which is the national honor society for physics students.
The student-led
Math Club is fun and engaging.
There are other fun activities like:

Talks by alumni and physicists from NASA, Physics Solutions (a medical physics company), and other universities

What Have Our Graduates Accomplished?
They have gained off-campus research experience at Rice University, Cornell University, Harvard University, Princeton University, the Institute of Nanobiology and Structural Biology (INSB) in Nove Hrady, Czech Republic, Jefferson Laboratory, and other universities around the U.S.
They have been admitted as graduate students at Harvard University, University of Houston, Rutgers University, Purdue University, University of Wisconsin at Madison, University of Rochester, and Brandeis University.
They have become medical students at Texas A&M University Medical School, University of Texas at Galveston Medical School, and Texas Tech University.
