Dr. Horn specializes in teaching microbiology and molecular biology and its interactions with our world. Committed to nurturing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in her students, she has incorporated teaching strategies for these in her courses. Her Microbiology course includes an undergraduate research component. Many of her students have presented their findings at the HBU Symposium held each spring. She strives to foster an interest in the study of life (biology), to support her students in their quest for knowledge, and to encourage them to be life-long learners.
Awards and Honors
Dr. Horn was honored with the HBU Opal Goolsby Award for Teaching Excellence in 1999. She also received recognition as HBU’s Faculty Woman of the Year in 1999. Her students have honored her several times with recognition in Who's Who Among American Teachers. In 2005, Dr. Horn was the Piper Nominee from the College of Science and Math. In 2007, Dr Horn was named as HBU’s Outstanding Advisor of the Year. She was awarded the National Academic Advising Association’s (NACADA) Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Faculty Advising in 2007.
Dr. Horn has researched and published in tumor virology and genetics. Her dissertation focused on the retrovirus, Murine Sarcoma Virus, and its oncogene "src." While at HBU, Dr. Horn has focused her research and presentations on science teaching strategies to encourage writing and critical thinking skills. She also serves as a reviewer of genetics textbooks and the MicrobeLibrary online Atlas. Presently, Dr. Horn is a part of the writing project at HBU.
Dr. Horn is the NCAA Athletics Certification Officer for the University. She serves on HBU’s Academic Affairs Committee and has served as the chair of the Medical Professions Advisory Committee and the Human Subjects Review Committee. She also has served as chair of the Cain Science Scholarship Committee and as a member of the Endowed Academic Scholarship committee. She served as a founding member of the HBU Honors College committee. Dr. Horn served as President of the HBU Faculty Assembly in 1995 and again in 2008-2009.
Dr. Horn enjoys working with the pre-optometry students and is the sponsor of HBU-POPS, the pre-optometry student organization. Dr. Horn is also the Faculty Secretary for the HBU Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa.
Dr. Horn has taught at the University of Houston, Alvin Community College and Houston Community College.
Dr. Horn served in 2010-2011 as the president of the Alumni steering committee for the University of Texas at Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. She is also a member of the UTHealth Development Board.
She continues to promote scientific literacy as a consultant for area science fairs. Dr. Horn's hobbies include learning, reading and photography.
