A Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation

Phi Alpha Theta, the African Student Association, and the History Department at HBU invite scholars, students, and the community to attend a commemoration of the Emancipation Proclamation as a turning point in American history. Scheduled events include a keynote address, scholarly presentations on the historical significance of the Emancipation Proclamation, musical performances, and a closing worship service.
Call for Papers
The Alpha Lambda Zeta chapter of Phi Alpha Theta invites papers on the historical significance of the Emancipation Proclamation. Papers addressing the impact of the EP on the Constitution, on African-American politics and culture, and on Texas history are particularly welcome. As a Christian university, HBU also welcomes papers that explore the relationship of religious faith to the emancipation of American slaves.

Registration for the Event
Registrations prior to September 7, 2012, will be at our discounted rate. General Admission is $40 for both days and includes a Friday evening reception as well as morning coffee and hot lunch on Saturday. Registration for General Admission is $20 for Friday evening only, $30 for Saturday only (includes the hot lunch.). Students receive an additional discount if registered before September 7, 2012.
HBU faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the concurrent paper sessions and do not need to register to attend them. Phi Alpha Theta and the African Student Association would like to extend a special invitation to members of the HBU community to attend the Rev. William A. Lawson’s keynote address on Friday, September 21, at 7:00pm in Belin Chapel. CLW credit is available to HBU students.
