Position Summary:

Houston Baptist University seeks a full-time faculty member to join the Department of English and Modern Languages. The successful candidate will be part of our new Smith College core teaching faculty and will focus exclusively on teaching and mentoring students.  Scholarly publication is not required for promotion.  In addition, this position will be shielded from administrative work and committee assignments.  The teaching assignment for this position will be twelve courses, which can be taught as a 6-6 load or any other permutation over a twelve month period to fit the faculty member’s schedule.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Primarily teach core classes, including our core composition and literature courses.
  • Occasionally teach upper-division courses in the applicant’s field
  • Advise and mentor students
  • Assist with curriculum development for core classes


Applicants should have a M.A. or Ph.D. in English Literature or Composition and Rhetoric. Successful candidates will possess the ability to teach courses in literature and composition from a Christian worldview and will demonstrate enthusiasm for our classical liberal arts core curriculum.  The ideal candidate will be dedicated to teaching and mentoring students.
