Sardis was an immensely wealthy city. You could literally pan for gold in the streams that ran through the city. They invented the process for dying wool. It was the center of the Lydian empire before the Persians and the Romans came. And it had a fortress that was thought to be impregnable.

This made the city complacent.

And the church at Sardis suffered the same bad habit.
